Sir Elton John and the Eternal Question: Who's Your Daddy?

It’s undeniable. Elton John and David Furnish make a beautiful couple. And “their” new son, Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John who weighed in 7lb 15oz, 22 inches long at birth, is surely a beautiful baby.

“The couple have not said which of them is the biological father of the baby, who was born via a surrogate mother in California on Christmas Day.” The more relevant issue is that, since both John and Furnish are both being billed as, “husbands,” who will little Zachary Jackson Levon call, “Daddy,” and what will he call his other parent? Daddy 2? Other Daddy? Mommy Substitute?

Whatever they are, their civil partnership was legalized in England five years ago following what could be called a 12 year courtship.

Entertainer Sir Elton John, 62, and Canadian filmmaker, David Furnish, 48, are both a little long in the tooth to have a baby so maybe an even better question might be: When Zack hits teenagehood, how will he address 74 year old Sir John? As Sir John? As Elder Dad? As Daddy Elton? As Gramps?

So many questions, so few answers. A pre-emptive solution to all these pun-less conundra was offered by officials in Ukraine in 2009 when they said, “Nyet” or the Ukrainian equivalent, to John and Furnish when they tried to adopt a Ukrainian baby boy . . .
