One Man's Stand against Grinchiness

Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas is 53 years old but his title character is as frisky as ever, alive and well in the hearts and minds of Scrooges, Humbuggers, and Grinch wannabes everywhere. Fortunately, more and more anti-Grinchers are finally fighting back in the belief that this may be a time of peace on Earth and good will toward all but that feeling doesn’t preclude asserting one’s faith.

Seuss’ original 1957 Grinch is depicted as a misanthrope who despises most everything but who is especially revolted by the thought of Christmas, so much so that he steals all the Christmas gifts and holiday hams and festive decorations from the good citizens of Whoville and, when Christmas comes anyway, realizes that Christmas isn’t about presents and hams and decorations but rather about much more. He returns all he had stolen, is embraced and welcomed by the Whovillians, and they all, presumably, live happily ever after.

The poor Grinch, a product of the left-leaning, prolific, Theodor Seuss Geisel, did come to understand what Christmas was not but never quite fully comprehended what Christmas was, or at least he never rhymed about it. The Grinch was secularly politically correct long before that term came into existence.

All that notwithstanding, a new and potent entrant into the anti-Grinch arena is Dr. Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas, who has launched the apolitical website, GrinchAlert.com, in an attempt to inform Americans as to which retailers, government entities, restaurants, banks, airlines, etc. have been good for goodness sake and which have been naughty for whatever sake.

Goodness and naughtiness, of course, are subjective qualities and the only criterion for inclusion on Jeffress’ good or naughty list is whether the listee is in the business of sucking dry all it can from Christmas at the same time refusing to . . .
