Personal Christmas Anecdotes

We all have favorite Christmas stories, well most of us do, those who celebrate Christmas, that is, which is most of us. Those tales can range from the nostalgic to the bittersweet to those we’d like to forget to those we can only barely remember.

Certain personal anecdotes stick in our minds like year old candy canes tend to stick to the roof of our mouths. Again, some are nostalgic, some bittersweet, some we’d like to forget, and some almost buried in the recesses of our aging brains. What follows is a story that combines all of the above.

The Santa Claus Incidents: When I was into my annual Santa Claus phase, dressing up as that little, old elf, I had various experiences including being asked to do my Santa shtick outside the home of one of our children’s friends who had younger siblings.

That shtick was a simple gig, lots of ho-ho-hoing and reindeer bell ringing while Santa was burdened under a huge bag of rolled-up newspaper and sporting a flashlight covered in red foil, simulating Rudolph’s nose, all performed at a safe distance where costume malfunctions were undetectable to young minds filled with thoughts of sugar plums, and video games.

All went well for the 5-minute duration of that performance and Santa could see the kidlets’ faces gleefully-plastered against a kitchen window as he went through his backyard routine. As he headed off to his 4-wheeled, Honda-motorized sleigh, the mom opened the door and motioned to him. She advised Santa that she had no clue as to who he was but thanked him profusely, anyway.

Santa had gone to the wrong house.
