America 2012: A Nation at Risk

“Stuff” is happening in America today that our country has rarely witnessed in our 224 year old history and none of it is propitious for our future.




True, we have suffered through other major crises, but never so many at the same time.



We survived the Revolution and early wars and revolts against our nationhood; we weathered a bloody Civil War; we eventually overcame the Great Depression; we struggled through the upheavals of the Civil Rights Movement the Viet Nam War protests; we mostly recovered from the horrors of September 11th, 2001; we lost thousands of our brave troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and some believe we actually won those wars.



However, we have never endured so many contemporaneous, dire threats to our national security, our fiscal future, our way of life, our cherished values, and our national character as we are witnessing today.



America made a grave mistake in November, 2008, a terrible mistake which, in the brief span of three and a half years, has served to greatly intensify those dire threats.



To be sure, the election of President Barack Hussein Obama did not incite crazed Muslim terrorists to launch an unprovoked war against the “Great Satan” and the entire Western world; that war has been ongoing for decades and has been smoldering for centuries.



What Obama has done is to minimize the magnitude of the dangers posed by Islam and has catered to, literally bowed to, the very Muslim potentate whose country hatched and financed 9/11.



He declared that a war on terrorism didn’t exist and then announced that the non-existent war was over by virtue of the defeat of al-Qaeda and our supposed victories in Iraq and Afghanistan, neither of which is a valid assumption.



He established domestic security measures which are more smoke and mirrors than actual safety nets. Perhaps the most telling feature of this commander-in-chief’s perspective on Americans’ safety was his 2010 concession to Fareed Zakariah that we are “resilient” enough to “bounce back” after nuclear attacks.



We were woefully unprepared for the Second World War. We are far more vulnerable in this, the Third World War, thanks to our president.



Should we somehow succeed in overcoming Muslim forces intent on destroying the America we love, we would still have to contend with the Great Recession, an economy which began to implode in 2008 and which shows few signs of real recovery.



The Obama administration’s total disregard for fiscal sanity and racking up trillions of dollars in unprecedented national deficits and debt has already cost the United States its long-standing AAA credit rating with no hope of paying our bills in sight.



The administration’s obsession with socialistic social programs such as food stamps, multi-billion dollar boondoggles and bailouts, and oppressive environmental regulations have stifled job growth and fostered dependency among the millions of the poor and the unemployed.



In brief, our economy and our society are a critical mess, a disaster as beneficial to Obama’s re-election prospects due to that widespread dependency as it is destructive of the human spirit.



Wars and rumors of war combined with economic malaise would be more than sufficient to effect America’s downfall. Unfortunately, there’s much more on our dismal plate: The social fabric which is supposed to bind us together and define us as a nation is disintegrating as rapidly as the integrity of our borders. . . .

2011 Hopes, 2012 Realities

I began writing an article entitled “A Christmas Retrospective” with, “The eventful year 2011 now drawing to a close may have been one filled with natural, political, and sociological disasters yet it produced unmistakable signs that all is not lost for America and the rest of humanity.”

I recounted the earthquakes, tsunamis, and tornados, the Arab Spring which portended an Arab Winter and worsening national and international tensions, the Occupy upheavals suggestive of revolution supported by Barack Hussein Obama 201 and yet I decided 2011 wasn’t as much a debacle as it was a year of hope springing eternal for our beknighted planet and nation.

Scratch any suggestions of 2012 being an improvement on 2011. On re-consideration of my Chistmas-inspired attack of optimism, 2012 promises to suck big time.

In part, events occurring over the past few days forced the revisionism.

The mayhem resulting from the sale of Air Jordans, a Santa in Grapevine Texas murdering 6 relatives, riots over rappers at the Mall of America, and Tim Tebow’s Denver Broncos losing all contributed to a change of perspective.

Iran taunting the U.S. Navy in the Strait of Hormuz and Obama’s public approval rating rising to 47.1 didn’t help, either.

Still, it was an article by Professor James Petras on GlobalResearch.ca that convinced me my rose-colored glasses had been clouded by my cataracts. Titled “Unrelenting Global Economic Crisis: A Doomsday View of 2012,” the article makes mincemeat of fools who detected substantial brightness in the world’s and America’s futures.

It should be noted that Petras, a retired professor of sociology, is an ardent socialist, self-described “revolutionary and anti-imperialist,” has been accused of anti-Semitism, and has taken distinctly anti-American positions. All that makes his views suspect but does not necessarily preclude the possibility he is wrong about the future.

Of course, too, one man’s opinion is just that, an opinion, but Petras’ gloomy forecast for the new year and beyond is both chilling and documented. When he writes, “The economic, political and social outlook for 2012 is profoundly negative. The almost universal consensus, even among mainstream orthodox economists is pessimistic regarding the world economy,” the professor doesn’t just predict, he substantiates his predictions.

Petras isn’t merely referring to economic chaos and crises as causes for concern. His prognosis for the world in general is ominously and universally dismal, which is typical for liberals.

We all know that former President George W. Bush is the cause of all the ills plaguing America, right? After all, our current president, Barack Hussein Obama, has said so, repeatedly if sometimes indirectly.

However, are Americans aware that Vice President Joe Biden has exonerated Bush, casting considerable doubts on carefully-cultivated conventional liberal-Democrat wisdom?

VP Biden recently undercut his boss’s tired, old economic mantra of “Bush did it,” that GWB is responsible for everything from failed banks to high unemployment to the plunging stock market, as well as for chaos in American schools, rioting in the streets and, probably, for too many fat kids eating Twinkies instead of watercress wraps.

Loose lips may have sunk Allied ships in WWII and it may be too much to hope that loosey-goosey Biden sank Obama with his remarks last week that the albatross of America’s miserable economy should be removed from Bush 43 and hung around his boss’s neck.

More precisely, the vice president, known for speaking his mind even when there’s nothing in it, said, “Right now, understandably–totally legitimate–this [Election 2012] is a referendum on Obama and Biden and the nature of the state of the economy.”

BULLETIN: Bloomberg.com reported on Wednesday that Americans have not only given a rousing thumbs-down to Obama’s “Job Act” but thumbed their noses at the president because of it.

As if President Barack Hussein Obama were foretelling the future at the same time he was serving up an object lesson on how he believes Americans should solemnify the memory of September 11th, 2001 by a “day of service,” he slapped up vittles in a soup kitchen on 9/11.

Most Americans disregarded, if they didn’t ridicule, his asinine idea of substituting public service in lieu of solemnity on 9/11 but they will be hard pressed to dismiss the image of soup kitchens in our future, especially in view of reports of spreading poverty and in light of the president’s lackluster performance in so-called “jobs speech” last Thursday.

Obama’s screwing up history, as in saying Lincoln “founded” the Republican Party and his gaffe-ing his way through his presidency have been more than adequately covered up by his mainstream media. (http://bit.ly/qKFXDP)

It will be far more challenging for Obama’s MSM to provide cover for an entire speech which was essentially an hour-long whine indirectly bitching at Republicans for their intransigence in favor of preserving the Republic and avoiding national bankruptcy instead of burdening the taxpayers, their children, and grandkids with another boondoggle.

With his trillion dollar 2009 unstimulating stimulus an abject failure in putting Americans back to work, Obama’s economic wizards devised another sure-fire scheme, the piddling Son of Stimulus, a $447 billion plan incorporating many of the unpalatable elements of the original failure, features previously rejected even by Obama’s own Democrats.

This time around, the Anointed One left his ointments home and didn’t emulate Bartles and James by politely thanking Congress in advance for its support. Instead, almost churlishly, he repeatedly demanded the Congress pass the new waste now, at once, two weeks ago, if possible.

In various forms, he reiterated his demand at least 17 times, apparently fearing that if congresspeople read it before passing it, they may not like it and forgetting that he isn’t an emperor and that the legislative branch is co-equal with the executive.

All but stamping his foot, whining of the consequences of non-passage and touting the improbable benefits, Obama resembled more an petulent child than a president. My four year old grandson would be sent to time-out or, preferably, to his bed, for such infantile conduct.

To his credit, the president didn’t repeat his “shovel-ready” lie; many of his brand new shovels won’t be shovelling until 2013, coincidentally after Election Day 2012.

Early on in his unprecedented second address to a joint session of Congress and the American people within less than 32 months–this president obviously craves attention as much as my grandson–Obama declared his “Jobs Act” would be fully “paid for,” as opposed to Obamacare, for instance. . .

Criminality like poverty will always be with us. It doesn’t take an unemployed NASA scientist to realize that, as long as the human species reproduces unsavory malcontents, greedy thieves, and amoral sociopaths, some people will assault, rob, maim, and murder other people.

Crime and criminals exist in every socio-economic strata with those in the “upper classes” most often engaging in major thievery and embezzlement–like the master of the Ponzi scam, Bernie Madoff–although the rich and famous aren’t exempt from murderous escapades–like rock impresario Phil Spector.

Other classes are more likely to indulge in a wider variety of criminality, what some sociologists explain away as a consequence of their status: In effect, they steal because the devil or their mama made them do it and they maim, murder, and wreak havoc because they don’t know any better due to poor parenting, impoverishment, social inequities, and societal-legal discrimination.

All of that, of course, is hogwash. Poor criminals become criminals for the same fundamental reasons the rich become criminals: a lack of respect, for themselves, for the law, for common decency, and for other people.

The Irish were notorious criminals a century ago. The term “paddy wagons” dates to the nineteenth century and referred to New York City police vehicles used to transport often drunk and disorderly, legal Irish immigrants arrested during Civil War draft riots and, afterward, apprehended for petty thievery or worse misdeeds.

The Irish–and Italians, to a lesser extent–climbed out of that political rut because they gained, earned, and learned respect for themselves, etc.

Today, although it’s politically incorrect to articulate it and the FBI is no longer allowed to track crime on racial bases, the unfortunate truth is that African-Americans per capita are responsible for far more criminal activity than whites. This widely-understood, but minimized, ignored, and buried fact of criminal life was previously detailed in “Taboo! The Truth about Black Crime,” http://bit.ly/nPFZFm.

That said, it’s incontestable that, compared to whites, blacks represent a grossly disproportionate number of inmates in U.S. jails and prisons. However, the rate of black incarceration is not attributable to racism, as racial agitators contend with scant proof, but to the reality that African-Americans are disproportionately guilty of the commission of crimes.

That brings us back to the root question of, Why? In turn, the “why” leads us to the aforementioned dearth of respect and those same agitators who make their street creds–and all too frequently win elections--by perpetuating the racism myth as the cause . . .

Obama's Hopeless, Liberal Change

There are liberals and there were liberals.

I’m talking here about American libs, not the British types who are a whole different set who have evolved from beliefs in classical liberalism to free thinkers, whatever that means, to what the new Brit PM calls his “conservative liberal” party, whatever that means.

Until relatively recently, British libs and American libs had one value in common: Without qualification, they cared for the well-being of their respective countries above all else, a sentiment absent today from the philosophy of America’s new liberals as epitomized by Barack Hussein Obama.

President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was a liberal. So, too, were the Happy Warrior, Hubert Horatio Humphrey, and a whole slew of other Democrats in the past half century, not inclusive of Lyndon Baines Johnson who governed by consensus until Dems turned against him for waging the Vietnamese War and conservatives rebelled because he refused to win that war.

Liberals in days gone by differed in many respects from their more conservative, Republican, opponents but they shared with that opposition a fundamental patriotism, a love of country which superseded base partisanship and the opportunings of special interests groups whose demands were contrary to the best interests of the country.

Not anymore.

That idyllic era came to an abrupt conclusion with Barack Hussein Obama although the end was presaged by Jimmy Carter’s inept politics of malaise and fearsome attack rabbits and Bill Clinton’s governing from the vantage points of what Dick Morris advised would best get him re-elected and how Monica Lewinsky could best service him.

Today, our president, elected despite his dubious credential of being the most liberal senator in the United States Senate during his remarkably brief two-year tenure in that august body, is locked in a death struggle.

His is certainly not a personal death struggle, to be sure, since he will no doubt outlive most of us thanks to his penchants for repetitive relaxation excursions to golf links, a multiplicity of family vacations in opulent locales, and a studied nonchalance as to the domestic and foreign perils the nation faces.

Obama’s stuggle primarily relates to the questions of whether to succumb to his instincts to abjectly cater to the insistent demands of his most restless constituencies or to head to the middle and again sucker a majority of 2012 voters into thinking he isn’t as radically liberal as he actually is.

He has many choices on his overflowing plate, including:

Should he stay his economic course and promote additional monetary stimuli which fail to stimulate, advance job programs which only increase government employment, add even more regulatory constraints which strangle businesses, and allow the EPA to cripple any recovery with its mindless obsession with inconsequential environmental issues?

. Should he strive to win what he called the Afghanistan ”war of necessity” or bug out and abandon that country to Taliban repression and a return it to a terrorist haven? . . .

A reality check: America’s economy was in the pits long before Europe’s upheavals, long before Japan’s tsunami and earthquake, long before the Mideast exploded, and long before Republicans made a half-hearted effort to effect fiscal sanity.

Next thing you know, our leader will be saying he really did close Gitmo, that he hasn’t really raised taxes, that Obamacare is constitutional, and that his bride has always been proud of her country.

Far more critical than any of those developments is a valid concern as to whether Obama is in his right mind when he contends he “reversed the recession.” That distorted thinking is contrary to all perceived reality and could be emblematic of an unbalanced mind which is significantly more dangerous than economies in upheaval, tsunamis, crazed Arabs, or angry Republicans!

That vicious, bigoted rant speaks for itself but I’ll add a few more: No, Mr. Silverman, that cross is no Christian icon in the context of the WTC memorial, the 3,000 innocents were not killed in God’s name but in Allah’s name, and the only ridiculous feature of your lawsuit is that you missed the entire point of the memorial and that cross–to remember, to mourn, and to resolve that what happened on September 11th, 2011 will never happen again.

Before anyone starts thinking that there’s nothing good to say about President Barack Hussein Obama and his presidency, a major conservative website, HumanEvents.com, has come up with 10 good things about the man and his administration. Most of the good comes with qualifications but, hey, we can’t expect miracles.

Among his foreign policy/anti-terrorism positives is his fundamental adherence to the initiatives of the man he consistently derided, George W. Bush. Gitmo is still open and will remain unshuttered indefinitely since Obama hasn’t the foggiest idea of what else to do with its resident terrorists and despite his pledge to close it within a year. HumanEvents also lists as a plus Obama’s not abandoning Afghanistan and Iraq, yet, despite his commitment to cut and run.

Politically, Obama’s other plusses include his inadvertent creation of the Tea Party and his also unintentional but invaluable assistance in aiding Republicans to take control of the House of Representatives.

On the domestic front, after kicking and screaming, Obama agreed to the extension of the Bush tax cuts, albeit for only 2 years, and increased the number of deportations of illegal aliens, although the administration went after Arizona’s new, common-sense immigration law.

Finally, thanks to his repeated gaffes and other demonstrations that he is as flawed and inept as Jimmy Carter, Obama self-deflated the self-created “messiah myth,” annoyed those in his party even more leftist than he, and, in what may be the greatest good he has accomplished, his love of vacations and golf have afforded other Americans to goof off too: http://tiny.cc/86728

What comes next after trillions? Quadrillions? Humungozillions?

Does it matter?

Good old Everett Dirksen, Republican senator and minority leader from Illinois in the 1960′s, is most remembered and credited today for his semi-tongue-in-cheek reflection that, “A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking real money.”

That cynical reference to the uninhibited spending of LBJ’s Democrats during the “Great Society,” which proved to be not so great and which in fact devolved into an economic disaster, is today fiscally as antiquated as high-button shoes have been for a century. In 2010, Dirksen would probably scratch his hoary, grey head and gasp, “Trillions?”

That’s the number politicians speak of today as if it’s simply the logical, economic extension of millions and Dirksen’s billions. On Friday, the Wall Street Journal published an article under Real Time Economics titled, “Number of the Week: 10.2 Trillion in Global Borrowing” which, in gross understatement, concluded, ”It’s easy to see that the risk of serious financial trouble is growing:” http://tiny.cc/rmda9

Scary People in the News, Part Two: Nassim Nicholas Taleb

My second nominee for last week’s most scary people in the news is Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a brilliant, Lebanese-born scholar, mathematician, epistemologist, and best-selling author who is scary for reasons different from Malik Zulu Shabazz’ scariness.

Shabazz is scary because he’s a dangerous black supremacist. Taleb is scary because he validates the opinion of millions of people who believe the President of the United States hasn’t a clue as to what he’s doing.

Taleb is the author of The Black Swan, the Impact of the Highly Improbable. The Black Swan Theory” refers “to unexpected events of large magnitude and consequence and their dominant role in history.”

Taleb has concluded that Obama’s vaunted “stimulus,” the linchpin of the administration’s scheme for reviving and stimulating the American economy, the stimulus he now wants replicated, was probably the worst thing that could have been done toward that end.

Now, that’s not really news. The administration’s tried–and failed–mantra that, “Bush did it!” never did ring true since our economic mess was a bi-partisan effort caused not chiefly by GWB spending like a drunken Dem but by Democrat congresses. Bush was grossly wrong. However, for necessary perspective, it was the Dems–with Rep. Barney Frank, Sen. Chris Dodd, and ACORN in the vanguard–who made a bad situation worse..

Democrats set up the housing crisis which precipitated the banking crisis by forcing lending institutions, especially but not exclusively Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac, to grant mortgages to too many people who didn’t have a pot to pee in but whom Frank and Dodd magnanimously felt were entitled to the American Dream, to own a home of their own

That’s an admirable goal on its surface but pockmarked by the realities that many people aren’t prepared, financially or in practicality, to own a home.

All that aside, back to Professor Taleb who is scary mainly because he reinforces what economic conservatives have felt all along but haven’t had sufficient mainstream support to prove our contentions that Obama and his fellow hotshots, his economic gurus who believed spending gazillions of dollars, would lead the country back to prosperity if not to the land of boundless milk and honey, were and are horses’ derrieres.

It’s disconcerting to be right when being right means your country is in a financial pickle the likes of which we haven’t witnessed since the Great Depression and from which extricating ourselves will take generations, if we can succeed at all.

In a speech last week, Taleb charged that Obama and his merry band of economic clods weakened the country’s economy by seeking to foster growth instead of paying down the federal debt. That logical route to solvency was lost on Obama’s misbegotten band of inept advisors and may be in process of being phased out. . .

As thousands of mortgagors, many of whom wouldn’t qualify for mortgages in the real world, line up to be bailed out by the feds, as the nation’s recession birth rate falls to 2.7%, the lowest in a century, as Joint Chief of Staffs Chairman Mike Mullen warns that the national debt is endangering national security, President Nero Obama fiddles away, chows down on shrimp and lobster, golfs, parties with the other rich and famous on Martha’s Vineyard, and generally enjoys the hell out of his sixth vacation this year.

Is anyone minding the ranch? It certainly isn’t our vice president who revels in his own non-existent, Nirvana.

It can’t yet be termed a double dipper, it certainly isn’t the Big Dipper, but VP Joe Biden’s sanguine reference some weeks ago to the summer of 2010 as “recovery summer” is turning out to be one of the dumbest and most presumptuous remarks our dumb and presumptuous vice president has made to date.

Even if Biden’s July mantra was only part of the administration’s campaign to convince the American people not to believe their lying eyes and those lying economic numbers and it wasn’t one his very original observations such as, “This is a f***ing big deal!” the term “Recovery Summer” has been hung around the VP’s neck like a dead economic albatross.

And, not only is Recovery Summer 2010 collapsing into Relapse Summer 2010 but the administration doesn’t seem to much care or notice any more than they notice former rabid supporters turning on them as if they had a terminal dose of the plague.

When the CBO announces that Obama’s stimulus “may” have added 3.1 million jobs and lowered the unemployment rate by up to 1.7% in the second quarter and is unable to substantiate either of those bizarre claims and no one is able to locate any of those phantom jobs and the Commerce Department reports a paltry 1.7% GDP increase in that same quarter, people begin to wonder as should the Obamians.

When staunch Obamian from day one, David Letterman, begins cracking jokes about the sorry state of America’s financial affairs and refers to his former hero as a one-term president, which Letterman has been doing of late, Obamians might want to consider sitting up and taking notice even if, by force of habit, Dave and his writers still reserve their most scathing rips for George W. Bush.

Things have really been getting cooler in America, in the American economy, that is.

Not that the economy ever really warmed up in this Great Recession which doesn’t seem to want to go away despite Obama’s $787 billion stimulus which was supposed to be the cure-all for what ails us.

It hasn’t cured jacksquat. In fact, it’s made things worse and all Obama’s horses and all his men aren’t able to put the economy back together again.

His two year old mantra of “Bush did it!” is getting very old and tired and only his diehard fans believe it anymore. He continues to remind us that Bush left him with a $1.3 trillion deficit after 8 years but makes no reference to the multi-trillion dollar deficit he has dug for us in a mere 17 1/2 months.

Still, instead of admitting his errors and reversing course when the steed he rode in on is showing signs of dying, the president and his trusty Congress are obliviously still trying to spend us into prosperity. . .

The Oil Mess: The L.A. Times reported when “Top Kill” was the last, best hope for plugging the British Petroleum gusher that the Obama administration was saying it was all over the Gulf oil spill.

The only way Obama was all over that oil mess was when he was trudging through it which he’s done 3 times now and counting but nothing ever seems to happen about it except more rhetoric and more gushing.

Trying to make up for weeks of inaction and disinterest, “Batting away suggestions that the federal response has been lackluster and that BP executives have been calling the shots, Obama insisted that ‘BP is operating at our direction. Every key decision and action they take must be approved by us in advance,’ Obama said. If the Coast Guard orders BP to do something, he added, ‘they are legally bound to do it’: ” http://bit.ly/bHgLE3

Just whom does this guy think he’s kidding. The federal response was not “lackluster;” it was non-existent until the Obamian incompetence became as transparent as the president said his administration would be. Only then did Obama semi-mobilize the forces that should have been deployed in April.

To say now that BP is going to ask how high when Obama tells it to jump is as patently absurd as wanting the American public to believe our government even knows what to do with the hole in the Gulf. The best bet at this point is to let BP and assisting oil companies to do their thing since they are the putative experts.

We should keep a close eye on them and what they’re doing, provide all the logistical back-up they need and more, stay out of the way when it comes to technical details, focus on the clean-up operation, and bill them for every nickle expended.

Obama can’t be blamed for the gushing oil. He very defintely can and should be blamed for not dealing with the consequences on a timely basis. . .

A Letter from a Grandpa to His Obamian Grandchild (received as an email)

"John is 63 years old and owns his own business. He is a life-long Republican and sees his dream of retiring next year is now all but gone. With the stock market crashing and all the new taxes coming his way, John knows he will be working for a good number more years.

John has a Granddaughter. Ashley is a recent college grad. She drives a late model car, wears all the latest fashions, and also likes going out and eating out a lot.

Ashley campaigned hard for Obama, and after he won the election she made sure her Grandfather (and all other Republican family members) received more than an earful on how the world is going to be a much better place now that Obama won the election.


Ashley recently found herself short of cash and cannot pay her bills, again. As she has done many other times in the past, she e-mailed her Grandfather asking for some financial help. Here is his reply:

"Sweetheart, I am replying to your request for more money. Ashley, you know I love you dearly and am sympathetic to your financial plight. Unfortunately, times have changed. With the election of President Obama, your Grandmother and I have had to set forth a bold new economic plan of our own….the ‘Ashley Economic Plan’.

Let me explain.

Your grandmother and I are highly productive, wage-earning tax payers. As you know, we have lived a comfortable life and in return have forgone many things like fancy vacations, luxury cars, etc. We have worked hard and were looking forward to retiring soon. But this plan has changed. Your president is significantly raising our personal and business taxes. He says it is so he can give our hard earned money to other people.

Do you know what this means, Ashley? It means less income for us. Less income means we must cut back on many business and personal expenditures.

One example is, we were forced to let go our receptionist today. You know her. She always gave you candy when you visited my office. Did you know she worked for us for the past 18 years? I can’t afford her anymore.

That is a taste of the business side. Some personal economic effects of Obama’s new taxation policies include none other than you.. ."

We the People Are Getting Screwed! (VIDEO)

This 6+ minute YouTube video is a relative oldie–as in 2 or 3 months–but still very much a goody.

It deals with the ongoing D.C., American, Obamian fiscal disaster although, oddly, it gives Obama a free ride on our economic trainwreck. What’s most chilling is that it pre-dated some of the more recent Washington fiscal madnesses.

In other words, things are much worse in mid-June than they were 3 months ago.

“BARACK, THE MAGIC NEGRO” HAD BETTER KNOW SOME REAL MAGIC

President-elect Barack Hussein “We-Only-Have-One-President-at-a-Time” Obama sure is sending mixed signals. On the one hand he stands virtually mute on foreign policy issues, on the other he speaks out quite a bit and in contradictions about the economy.

Methinks he wants to keep both hands clean.

With the blessings of a mass media blinded by his light during the primary and general election campaigns, he skated through the muck and mire of Reverend Wright and Bill Ayers and Bernadette Dohrn and Tony Rezko and emerged untarnished, at least in the eyes of a majority of the electorate.

Thanks to that same worshipful media, he escaped ridicule, and national publicity, for his countless gaffes, which were so numerous that Michelle Malkin called him “a perpetual gaffe machine.” My favorites are his claim of campaigning in all 57 states, his reference to Iran as a tiny, harmless country, and his baldfaced lies, or gaffes, in his autobiography, Dreams of My Father.

Nevertheless, he was elected, so it’s understandable that the poor guy started to believe his own press and overrated teflon-coated charm until reality finally hit home. He has to realize by now that a president can’t fool all the people all the time, even with a complicit media concealing his flaws and doublespeak.

It’s bad enough that his administration has had so many problems even before it becomes an administration. Mr. Clean’s troubles had just started with Illinois Governor Blagojevitch trying to sell his senate seat to the highest bidder when it turned out that his Chief-of-Staff-to-be, Rahm Emanuel, had numerous chats with Blago, unbeknownst to his boss-to-be, Obama. That’s not much of a testimonial to having a firm grip on his people.

George W. Bush would have been hooted off the stage for his incompetence had a major player in his administration been negotiating, or doing whatever Rahm was doing, with someone such as Blago–and behind his back, if that truly were the case. We will probably never learn the substance of their many chats.

Then came the withdrawal as Commerce Secretary-designate of the much lauded, Bill Richardson...
