It's Enough to Make You Cynical!

Keeping track of current events is a thankless, annoying, infuriating endeavor, not to mention that it’s not good for the hypertensive.

Just a smattering of news items on a single day reveals such heights of government hypocrisy, mismanagement, and manipulation and such blatant idiocy that it’s a challenge not to think our nation has gone totally bonkers.

For example, going green is good and in, right? We’re lectured daily if not by the president then by minions under his command and by state and local greens that we must at all costs all do our bit to save energy. Use mercury-laden cfc lightbulbs, risk life and limb by bicycling to work, keep our homes at temperatures barely high enough to prevent frostbite in our living rooms, flush toilets that don’t flush, etc. etc. etc.

However, proving once again that it’s not easy being green, after our leader emphatically announced this week that, “I’m directing our departments and our agencies to make sure 100 percent of the vehicles they buy are fuel-efficient or clean energy cars and trucks by 2015. Not 50 percent, not 75 percent–100 percent of our vehicles,” we learn that all vehicles are equal but that some vehicles are more equal than others.

Needless to say, the government has its reasons, chief of which although unannounced is that it can do what it thinks best. The rest of us can do what we’re told to do.

Speaking of the rest of us, there are far fewer of the rest of us than ever before, that is, more Americans are employed by various governmental entities than in manufacturing, construction, farming, fishing, mining and utilities–combined! . . .

Toilets: Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Under 3-term Mayor Michael Boomboom/Bloomberg, New York City is fast evolving into the Nanny Capital of America. Smoking is banned virtually everywhere, sodium-salt is restricted in restaurants, and sugary foods are next on the hit list as Bloomberg continues his quest to care for every health need of New Yorkers, at the expense of depriving them of the right to decide when and where they will puff and what they can eat.

Big Mike is watching you!

Perhaps bowing to complaints that the city is becoming a mini-nanny state with arbitrary rules imposed by an supposedly omniscient, authoritarian government, New York is now getting into toilets, actually into all things watery.

Already all the rage in Europe, “dual flush” toilets are coming to a New York bathroom near you.

As part of a wide-ranging water conservation law passed by the City Council this past week, “new toilets will have to be high water efficient or ‘dual-flush,’ which allow users to choose between a high pressure flush for solid waste, and a low-pressure flush for liquid:” http://tiny.cc/ao674

See! Bloomberg can now say, we allow individual decision-making, even if that decision is rather simple except in certain cases when toilet users . . . Well, use your own personal experience and imagination.

No word yet on whether thousands of new city workers will have to be hired to monitor strict compliance with the liquid-solid rules.

What's a Mother to Do? Part One: Dealing with International Green Hypocrites

Perhaps I shoudn’t ask the question, “What’s a mother to do?” since I’m a father not a mother. However, a male colleague used to ask that question not as a query but as an expression of frustration as to what anyone can do in response to the conditions and state of the world today.

The short answer is that a mother, or father, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, cousin, can’t do very much if anything but it’s nevertheless fulfilling to speculate on what we should do under certain sets of circumstances.

Would that we average joes and josies could do things, change things, or reverse things that, in our inexpert and humble opinions, called for doing, changing, or reversing based on a long-lost American skill and capacity, the application of common sense.

“Mother’s Commonsensical Solutions” will no doubt be attacked as everything from nonsensical and simplistic to naive and stupid but asi es la vida, tough apples. Readers are invited to offer better ideas.
