Oddities: Britain, Mexico, and Blago

For at least two years, America has been living those “interesting times” referred to in the ancient Chinese proverb-curse and, if anything, those times are getting more “interesting” almost by the day. It makes one wonder what the blazes is going on.

For example, what are we and our long-time, closest ally Great Britain to make of reports that, “The US secretly agreed to give the Russians sensitive information on Britain’s nuclear deterrent to persuade them to sign a key treaty.” That information comes from WikiLeaks and is being reported only by Britain’s The Telegraph since Obama’s MSM is ignoring it as per custom.

The Brit tabloid reports further that, “Information about every Trident missile the US supplies to Britain will be given to Russia as part of an arms control deal signed by President Barack Obama next week,” http://tiny.cc/jslt4, which gives rise to questions as to whose side is our president on and whether that “special relationship” between America and the Brits is still special to Obama.

But the news gets better, or worse, depending on your perspective.

The United States of America is the pre-eminent world power, the only superpower left standing after the U.S.S.R. crumbled thanks in large part to Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II even if libs hate to admit their invaluable assistance. To our south is the land of Estados Unidos Mexicanos, aka Mexico, a borderline Third World nation which tends to value siestas, tamales, and tortillas as highly as its oil reserves.

So, why are American citizens in our southwest begging Mexico for electrical power? . . .

Hate Crimes = Thought Crimes

Britain doesn’t lead the world in much nowadays, unless you include British Petroleum successfully polluting vast tracts of the Gulf of Mexico and its horrendous health care system.

However, the Brits are still the leaders of the pack when it comes to politically correct Big Brotherism especially when it comes to punishing free speech and so-called hate crimes.

According to Merriam-Webster.com, the concept of “hate crime” dates to 1984 and is defined as ”any of various crimes (as assault or defacement of property) when motivated by hostility to the victim as a member of a group (as one based on color, creed, gender, or sexual orientation).”

Now, virtually any crime of violence against persons or property can reasonably be interpreted as a hate crime since few such crimes are motivated by the antithesis of hatred and the un-loved person or thing thereby becomes the object of some form of attack.

For law enforcement agencies to determine that a run-of-the-mill crime qualifies as a hate crime, they would have to prove the perpetrator had hateful thoughts toward a victim, based on “color, creed, gender, or sexual orientation,” barring a statement by said perpetrator such as, “I hate Buddhists” before fire-bombing a Buddhist temple. Otherwise, he might just be a random temple fire-bomber.

Point is, to be enforced, law enforcers and juries must be able to read the minds of the alleged perps and be satisfied the crime in question was also a thought crime.

Great Britain, apparently, doesn’t draw such fine distinctions. . .

When plotting radical changes, government should always have a model, a fallback positioning to which it can point and say, “See! That’s what we’re doing or trying to do.”

As the president sits down with friend and foe for his scheduled six hour tête-à-tête, his nationally-televised pitch for his version of Obamacare, some related news on those exemplars has been gurgling to the surface.

First came Canadian Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams who effectively said to Health Canada, that country’s socialized health care system, fuggedaboudit. I want some real health care, down south in that barbaric nation, the United States.

Williams’ heart condition health issue doesn’t even seem to be life-threatening. However, he flew to Miami for treatment because, as he confessed, “This was my heart, my choice and my health. I did not sign away my right to get the best possible health care for myself when I entered politics:” http://bit.ly/bZkqTK

Put less diplomatically, Danny was saying that Canada’s health care system was fine for the peons but as for him, he preferred good health care.

If Premier Williams had any class . . .
