The States of Maine and Marriage

Two widely disparate topics, Maine and marriage, may be more closely related than appears at first glance. They are linked by payoffs.

The state of Maine, not usually in the news this time of year for anything other than what its RINO Republicans are up to in Washington or record cold snaps, has gained a new distinction as the first state to win an Obamacare waiver from HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Maine thus joins an increasingly unselective group of 1,040–as of Thursday–including McDonalds, the Service Employees International Union, Teamsters, UFCW, Steelworkers, Communications Workers of America, United Federation of Teachers, public sector unions, and numerous local school disricts encompassing 2.5 million Americans–as of Thursday.

Maine and the other elites are exempted from the onerous and expensive regulations imposed on the rest of us schleps, which onerousness and expense increase with every new waiver since the whole concept of Obamacare was predicated on sharing the costs. The fewer the participants, which numbers shrink with every waiver, the higher their costs.

As always with this administration, there’s a proffered excuse, in the case of the Pine Tree State, a threat by a major insurer, MEGA Life and Health, to “withdraw from the market altogether if the federal requirement remained in place:” http://tiny.cc/91ftl

The unannounced threat posed by many of the other exemptees, and virtually all of the waivered unions, is to withdraw from supporting Obama in 2012. No fool he, the president knows where his bread is buttered and where his political contributions come from. He took the state in ’08 with 57.71% of the vote, a difference of 126,650 votes.

Two Rebellious Republican Governors

Politicians are known to be many things among which is having an ingrained tendency to be, well, political in the diplomatic sense, not speaking their minds, not going out of their way to be overly honest by possibly offending people and certainly not insulting their constituents. It’s what makes them politicians.

It’s also what makes them phonies.

Therefore, when a pol departs from that norm and dumps the typical script in favor of straightforward, honest frankness, it’s refreshing.

On the eve of Martin Luther King Day 2011, newly-elected Republican Governor Paul LePage of Maine added just such a touch of refreshment when he announced in Sanford, ME to the displeasure of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People why he wouldn’t be attending the upcoming MLK festivities.

The governor, born into an impoverished, French-speaking Lewiston family of 18 kids who is a self-made man, said, “They are a special interest. End of story . . . and I’m not going to be held hostage by special interests.” He added when asked if this was part of a pattern, “Tell ‘em to kiss my butt. If they want to play the race card, come to dinner and my [adopted, black Jamaican] son will talk to them.”

Not attending MLK festivities? The NAACP a special interest playing the race card? Telling them to kiss his butt if they didn’t like it? What is this guy, anyway, an honest man or a politician?

The answer is obvious and his honesty should have been just as obvious since he didn’t pull any punches as a candidate, either. Then he had said that if he were elected governor, headlines would read, “Governor LePage tells Obama to go to hell.“ He later said he regretted his choice of words but stood behind their intent: http://tiny.cc/7j7ld

Another new Republican governor, Chris Christie of New Jersey, hasn’t yet taken on the president with such blunt language but give it time. What he has taken on during his brief, one-year tenure in Jersey is Obama’s most highly-favored groups, public service and especially teacher unions, whose benefits, salaries, and pensions are in process of bankrupting over half the states in America. . .

When Boiling a Frog, Start with Cold Water

Few people, even Glenn Beck, would consider tossing a live frog into boiling water.

Even if you wanted to and even if frog legs taste like chicken, you really have to start with cold water so Freddy the Frog doesn’t catch on and make one giant leap for frog-kind and cause serious burns to the eviiler.

That brief lesson in proper frog-boiling procedure is also applicable to human beings. The homosexual community, the Gay Lobby, knows the technique well.

After years of inyerface promotion of the GLBTQ agenda, at least some elements of that community have achieved degrees of subtlety by taking advantage of friendly legislators, judges, and commissioners to get what they want.

Principally what they want is acceptance and what better place to start than with schoolchildren?

As Maine goes, so goes the nation is an old political truism. As it relates to homosexuals, it may become an American sociological truism in a few short years.

I’ve long suspected that there’s something in New England’s water which could help explain the goings-on up there in cold country over the past few decades.

The great state of Maine made a collective decision on Tuesday to buck the trend of its New England neighbors and to effectively make an announcement to its resident and non-resident homosexuals.

The Pine Tree State announced that it doesn’t necessarily condemn their lifestyle but it emphatically rejects their agitation for state-approval of what Christians call Holy Matrimony.

The vote to overturn the state legislature’s bid to extend Maine’s imprimatur to gay marriage stood at 53-47% at last count adding Maine to the 30 other states which have voted against same-sex weddings.

By judicial fiat, in five New England states plus Iowa such marriages have been legalized.

That vote is only relatively newsworthy compared to the reactions of one prominent homosexual.

According to the Bangor, ME Daily News, Jesse Connolly ”pledged” after their defeat “In a defiant speech to several hundred lingering supporters, . . . that his side ‘will not quit until we know where every single one of these votes lives.’ “ (http://bit.ly/3FgU4K)

For some reason, that threat was omitted in most other mainstream news reports.

Just why Connolly is so committed to learning the addresses of “these votes” is unclear but it sure smacks of an effort at intimidation against those who voted to oppose gay marriage.

Could Connolly and fellow gays be planning to attack their opponents with their purses and feather boas?

Next, and lest we disregard the dedication and vicious nature of Obama supporters such as the Service Employees International Union, SEIU, take a look at this reaction to a rara avis, that rare bird, a conservative African-American.

Kenneth Gladney had come to demonstrate his rights to free speech at Rep. Russ McClanahan’s town hall meeting by distributing free “Don’t Tread on Me” flags when he was attacked by SEIU thugs.

“Gladney said he was giving out the “Don’t Tread on Me” flags when someone walked up to him and asked, ‘Who in the (expletive) is selling this (expletive) here?’

“Gladney said he asked him if he wanted one of his flags, and the man (who was also black) asked Gladney, “What kind of n_____ are you to be giving out this kind of stuff?” (http://bit.ly/367DJ5)

One of those arrested in the unprovoked August assault on Gladney was Elston K. McCowan, Baptist minister, community organizer, former local SEIU director, and Green Party candidate for the mayoralty of St. Louis who had accused the mayor of racism: http://bit.ly/2fyUx4.
