Kudos to Ireland and Bristol Palin, Brickbats to the Corrupt MSM
Some events and people receive insufficient public plaudits for outstanding contributions to the progress of humanity or to exposing political hypocrisy. Other people receive either commendation for their degradation of American culture or scant notice of their foul commentary by the mainstream media.
Following are a few examples of under-reported events and individuals and a number that exemplify the remarkably uncivil and hate-filled atmosphere that permeates America’s left wing.
KUDOS TO:
IRELAND: In a stunning rebuke of the United Nations and evidence that The Land of Saints and Scholars hasn’t totally lost its soul, the government of the Republic of Ireland has refused to accede to U.N. pressure to violate Ireland’s constitution by legalizing the practice of murdering pre-born human babies.
According to National Right to Life News Today, “In rejecting the UN recommendations, Ireland stood by its sovereign right to make its own laws and uphold its constitutional protection for unborn children while assisting mothers during pregnancy and childbirth.”
In doing so, the Irish government has concurred with the Irish people who have repeatedly rejected legalizing abortion in various referenda, a decision never accorded the American people by our government.
BRISTOL PALIN: The eldest daughter of Sarah and Todd Palin has written a letter to President Barack Hussein Obama acquainting him with his hypocrisy and insensitivity toward women, his wife, and his daughters by not condemning Bill Maher for his repulsive comments about the Palins and women in general by not rejecting Maher’s million dollar gift to an Obama PAC.
In her respectful missive, the twenty-one year old Bristol admits her past mistakes in conceiving an out of wedlock child and attests she has found “forgiveness and redemption” in God, something Bill Maher will never find.
Ms. Palin cites Maher’s reference to her Down Syndrome brother saying, I was “f—-d so hard a baby fell out.” She fails to mention Maher’s description of her mother as a “c*nt” and his other misogynistic comments and wonders why the president hasn’t called her to express his indignation and support yet has accepted Maher’s million.
(In a related story, the FLOTUS, Lady O, appeared on Letterman Monday and Dirty Dave obsequiously groveled before his “lovely” guest. There were no references to Maher or to Dirty Dave’s calling Sarah Palin slutty nor to his hilarious comment that Bristol’s underage sister engaged in sex with Alex Rodriquez out in left field at Yankee Stadium.)
BRICKBATS TO:
THE MSM
Brickbats should be tossed in the direction of Obama’s mainstream media which has successfully concealed our president’s radical past and radical agenda as well as condoning obscene and hateful remarks by Obama aficionados.
One recently-uncovered news item concerning the source of the mysterious funding that enabled a poor, semi-black kid from Hawaii to attend prestigious and expensive Harvard University has escaped notice by the MSM.
It turns out, as per the recollections of a humble public servant, a postman who delivered mail to the home of the parents of unrepentant terrorist, Bill Ayers, Obama got to Harvard not on his good looks but thanks to the beneficence of Ayers’ Marxist parents, Tom and Mary Ayers, who thought Obama was a foreigner.
The parents virtually adopted the young Barry Obama and bankrolled Barry’s college expenses since the future president fit the Ayers’ hopes for a communist revolution in America.
The now-retired postman, Allen Hulton, recalls Mary Ayers enthusiastically praising Obama, whom she thought might be Kenyan, and remembers once meeting Obama outside the Ayers’ home. Out of the blue, he told Hulton he planned to become president.
To determine Mr. Hulton’s credibility, see the full story and a video of an interview with the letter carrier here.
For more than four years, the mainstream media have failed to do their job by reporting on Obama’s connections with any of the Ayers, with Bernardine Dohrn, or with any other revolutionary associates of the president.
The MSM has also fumbled the “slut ball” ever since Rush Limbaugh used the derogatory term to describe leftist activist, Sandra Fluke. . . (Read more at http://www.genelalor.com/blog1/?p=17983.)

The Sad Disintegration of the Land of Saints and Scholars
The Sad Disintegration of the Land of Saints and Scholars
Probably no other country in the Western hemisphere has undergone more profound changes in terms of national identity and moral degradation as a result of its eager participation in the European Union and last decade’s economic boom.
The Republic of Ireland, the Celtic Tiger of 1995-2008 with a growth rate as high as 9.4%, precipitously devolved from a mini-financial and high-tech power into a pathetic economic basket case with an unemployment rate of 14% by 2010.
Worse, Ireland wanted to play like the Big Boys and became a nation so obsessed with shedding its reputation as a step-child of the EU that it sank into a morass of massive spending, uncontrolled corruption, and political correctness which have virtually destroyed its national soul.
Those are serious charges although statistically-based and predicated on my status as an Irish-American and a fairly-frequent visitor to the Olde Sod over the last ten years, as well as someone who knew Ireland when it was still the old Ireland, before it hooked up with the rabble of Europe by adopting their liberal, free-wheeling, PC, soul-less social phlosophies.
Lot of good it got them in the long run.
Ireland’s latest demonstration that it has become a nation more concerned with being a full European, PC partner than with common sense is the announcement by the Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan that he will institute a rule that 30 per cent of all election candidates must be women. . .

Barry O'Bama Goes Home
Barry O'Bama Goes Home
Sure, now, the good paple of the Olde Sod, the Oirish, musta bin bustin’ their buttons when one of their own returned home! I mean, now, the land of sints ‘n’ scholars likes to say, “Níor bhris focal maith fiacal riamh” or, as narrowbacks put it, ”A good word never broke a tooth,” and ain’t dat de truth? (Few, if any, Irish under 90 speak quite like that, by the way.)
The Irish know, of course, that the Yank president’s name isn’t really “Barry O’Bama” and, despite his appearance and what some have said, he isn’t descended from those blaggard Black and Tans who slaughtered and pillaged the Emerald Isle when the Irish fought for their independence.
Nevertheless, Barack Hussein “Barry” Obama “went home” this week.
His limo got hung up, literally, pulling out of the gate at the American embassy although all the president’s men swore he wasn’t in that particular Caddy but rather in the one behind. It would have been highly unusual for the president not to be an occupant of the flag-bedecked, heavily-armored vehicle aptly nicknamed “the Beast” but the Secret Service wouldn’t lie simply to protect all the president’s dignity and the obvious symbolism of his involuntary “suspension.”
However, it didn’t matter a whit to the Irish where Obama was riding, how undignified it was, or how he was spinning his wheels.
One of “their own,” wife in tow as usual, had returned to his ancestral home of Moneygall in County Offaly and the Moneygallians, the Offalyians, indeed all of Eire were thrilled.
He greeted a (very) distant cousin, quaffed a gulp of Guinness in a local pub, wished the bar a hearty “Slainte!,” and observed to one of the locals, “You look a little like my grandfather,” which must have caused the poor man to check a mirror before he ran home to share that good news with the family.
That Barack/Barry. He’s such a guy.
I wonder how proud that lookalike . . .

The Brits and the Irish An Gorta Mor
The Brits and the Irish An Gorta Mor
In 1997, then British Prime Minister Tony Blair made the extraordinary–albeit a century and a half too late–gesture of accepting national blame and extending the British government’s hand in apology to Ireland for what is now known as The Great Hunger.
That political exercise doesn’t come close to making amends for atrocities committed by a world power against a conquered, defenseless people.
Also known as the Irish Potato Blight and the Potato Famine, An Gorta Mór in Gaelic describes the period between 1845 and 1850 but “great hunger” says it all: A million and a half to two million Irish literally starved to death or died from diseases induced by starvation–not the million Blair said–during those years.
In 2011, with our tater tots and pastas it’s as difficult to grasp the enormity of such numbers as it is to understand how a whole people could be decimated by the loss of a single crop. That difficulty and understanding become more explicable in light of Ireland’s history with Britain.
As Grant Lawrence wrote in A People’s History of the Great Irish Famine, ”History tells us that the Great Famine was caused by the potato blight. But, the potato disease shouldn’t have created the misery of what came to be known as the Great Famine. The starvation and suffering that arose from the potato failure could have been drastically reduced or even eliminated if the British had implemented governmental policies against exploitation to protect the Irish people.”
Lawrence adds, ”Instead, the British did just the opposite.” . . .

Ireland, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Parts 3 and 4
Ireland Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Parts 3 and 4
. . . The Bad News
Meanwhile, despite all the good news, there was a distinctly dark side to life in Ireland in 2006, news that has grown much darker over four years with the economic contraction and the bursting of the real estate bubble.
The once-vaunted health system (acclaimed when the now-defunct Irish Sweepstakes financed Irish hospitals) was in serious trouble then and the situation has worsened as the euros have dried up.
On my visits, a number of people shared anecdotes about how friends and relatives had gone to emergency rooms and were kept on gurneys for more than twenty four hours before they even saw a doctor. Even then it was rarely an M.D. but what we would call a physician’s assistant.
In 2005, only five of fifty four hospitals were rated by the government as hygienically “good,” a figure that most were able to improve in 2006, but the hospitals were still woefully behind most international standards, a condition that has been exacerbated in the last few years.
New hospitals were still being built by the cash-flush government through 2007 but some were opening without beds! . . .

Ireland Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Part Two
Ireland Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Part Two
. . . And it was not just Brits who were flocking to the Old Sod.
Under the auspices and requisites of the European Union, by 2007, Iranians, Nigerians, Iraqis, Cambodians, VietNamese, Chinese, as well as Poles, Czechs, and other east Europeans, people of virtually every nationality were re-locating to Ireland seeking jobs and a better life–and citizenship.
A puckish cousin had asked me on one of my visits, “Now, could you tell me what an American looks like?” I answered that we look like what an Irishman will look like in a few generations: diverse in color, national origin, and cultural values.
In July, 2006, Ireland was pronounced the second richest country in the world, after Japan, in terms of real estate values, and the Irish puffed out their chests with pride in the knowledge that Ireland had finally arrived on the international scene.
Properties which were valued at thousands of Irish pounds ten years earlier were newly valued in the hundreds of thousands . . .

Ireland Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Part One
Ireland Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Part One
. . . It was then still a sleepy, little country, filled with picturesque, quaint villages and counties, and awash in history.
With its thousand shades of green due to its many fine, soft rains, its countless pristine lakes, streams and rivers, its tumble-down ancient castles, peat bogs, tiny roads where people drive on the wrong side, its Blarney Stone, Ring of Kerry, Galway Bay, Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands, Ireland was a beautiful, simple place then.
And, Mr. Joyce, Dublin was bustling—and far from dirty. But the Ireland of 1978 could not hide the reality that it was a benighted land.
The Battle of the Boyne in 1690 had been a watershed and since that British victory on that July day, the fate of Ireland was sealed for centuries. . .

Dear, Dirty Detroit
Dear, Dirty Detroit
In one of his greatest novels, Ulysses, the Irish writer James Joyce famously referred to his nation’s capital as “dear, dirty Dublin,” thereby expressing his love-hate ambivalence toward the city and land of his birth.
After many years in recovery from the repressive British yoke, Ireland, with Dublin as its centerpiece, would rise from Joyce’s dirt to become the vaunted Celtic Tiger of Europe with the Irish enjoying one of the most robust economies on the face of the planet.
James Joyce would be proud today.
Some of that luster has been lost in the current recession, due as much to the general downturn as to Ireland’s abandonment of proven successful, free enterprise, low taxation, fiscal policies.
Ireland could be an object lesson for the American city of Detroit were it not that Detroit were so far gone. It would be a real stretch for any Detroiter to find much Joycean love for that city.
Once the 4th largest city in America, Detroit is almost moribund. The most liberal big city in the nation has slipped to 11th largest as things became worse and worse and about a million of its citizens gave up and fled.
It has been suggested the best thing to do with this crime-ravaged and economically-destitute town is to bulldoze it and begin all over again.
Would that bulldozing were feasible.
As Rich Lowry wrote on Realclearpolitics.com, Detroit “stands as a stark statement of the failure of urban liberalism.”
Detroit’s decline and fall may have begun with the race riots stoked by MLK in 1968 but the election in 1974 of its first black mayor, Coleman Young, clearly greased the skids. The collapse and bailout of the auto industry merely iced the cake with rancid topping.
Young would reign for 20 years. . . .

Nasty Signs of Green Times
Nasty Signs of Green Times
Ok, there’s no need to admit it since even Jerry Seinfeld does it.
I’m not talking sex or nose-picking but bathroom, umm, activities. Granted the subject is not your usual cocktail party chat fare and it’s gross but, unfortunately, it’s in the news.
Overachieving songstress Sheryl Crow and political activist Laurie David started it all with their one-sheet proposal a few years back.
(The terminally squeamish should feel free to substitute “bathroom tissue” wherever the terms “toilet paper” or “tp” is mentioned in this article.)
In sum, enviro-zealots Crow and David seriously proposed that Americans be limited to a single sheet of toilet paper when they had to skip to the loo. The two self-appointed eco-experts felt that challenging sacrifice was needed to save the planet.
Both withdrew into the bushes when their scheme was met with a torrent of mockery and they then pulled an Emily Litella and declared, “Never mind.”
A related toilet tale later bubbled up in cash-strapped Riverside County, California when officials decided they just had to save a third of a penny per tp sheet.
Their plan as reported by the New York Times: “There was a texture test, and then the Facilities Management Department decided that Angel Soft would be utilized for elected officials and their guests. The remainder of the county facilities would be using two-ply.”
For more detail on both stories, toilet paper aficionados are referred to ”Things Get Rough in California,” http://www.genelalor.com/blog1/?p=1007.
Things continue to gurgle on the toilet front.
Last month came the allegation that, unlike people who care about the planet, over-indulged, Earth-hating Americans are inclined to softies when it came to tp.
Super-Charmins and comparable super-soft “terlet paper,” as my mom used to call it, were wiping out tens of thousands of acres of old growth forests which are the prime softness sources. Newer trees make for a rougher going but it sure beats chopping down redwoods, no?
The enviro-whackos think we should emulate Europe and use single ply, recycled paper, which is tantamount to using dry leaves or old copies of the Times.
Those Earth-friendly Europeans are in the forefront of the effort to save the trees, especially old trees and should serve as models for us profligate Americans who love the soft life.
At least one Irish girls’ school has shown the way toward saving a few euros . . .
