Edwardsian Dirt: Elizabeth and John Edwards

Edwardsian Dirt: Elizabeth and John Edwards

. . . All that said, allowing that Elizabeth Edwards may only be dead three weeks, it may not be awfully premature to set Elizabeth’s record straight. She is already buried and I come not to praise her.

Acclaimed a champion of health care reform, championing it only after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, Mrs. Edwards was an accomplished lawyer in her own right who had campaigned tirelelessly for the two Johns, Edwards and Kerry, that year. She was also a vocal advocate for gay marriage and abortion rights.

If there were two America’s in JJE’s universe, there were also two Elizabeths.

If not a confirmed atheist or agnostic, she reacted with perhaps understandable bitterness following her diagnosis saying that “she couldn’t see how she could believe in a god who would blow her 16-year-old son off the road and kill him in an auto accident in 1996 and that any god who could do that was a god that she was not going to be praying to to cure her cancer because if he wouldn’t save her son, he wasn’t going to save her:” http://tiny.cc/gmahu

According to ABCGMA.com, Mrs. Edwards, separated but not yet divorced from her husband of 30 years, threatened JJE’s former aide, Andrew Young, with an alienation of affection lawsuit for having helped cause the dissolution of her marriage and attempted to extort money from him. The threat was both irrational and ironic since Edwards had tapped his long-time aide to be his fall guy to take the heat for impregnating Rielle and Young had, temporarily, agreed out of deference to his boss: http://tiny.cc/fzo87

When the burden of that outrageous lie became too much for Young and his wife to bear, he spilled his guts on JJE and the outrage as well as on Elizabeth’s threats and vicious name-calling in his 2010 tell-all book, The Politician.

Those are all sufficient references to get the picture. There’s no need to recount the many corroborated stories of an insatiably ambitious Elizabeth Edwards, an apparent vile shrew who browbeat her weak and weepy husband, treatment that in no way excuses John Edwards’ caddish, corrupt behavior but which does give reason to remember Elizabeth as nothing more than a loving mother.

May she rest in peace, along with John Edwards’ career. And may God pity 12 year old Emma Claire Edwards, 10 year old Jack Edwards and, especially, little Frances Quinn.

In Defense of the Westboro Baptist Church

In Defense of the Westboro Baptist Church

Now that the threat of a demonstration by zealots of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church to create a disturbance at the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards has passed, it’s an opportune time to reassess just what Westboro is up to, what it wants, and why those zealots do what they do.

In a previous life, actually in a previous post dated almost a year ago, I wrote about that “The Westboro Baptist Congregation, the WBC, so thrives on outlandish and hateful propaganda that it must be regarded as one of the worst organizations in the nation in terms of vicious radicalism.

“Make no mistake, the WBC has countless hate-peers. Nevertheless, it’s a standout performer, in a class by itself, especially when it comes to attacks on homosexuals and Jews.

“What makes the WBC even worse is that it cites both Old and New Testament scripture to bolster its points of view and its vile invective. Its website, Godhatesfags.com, cites Calvinistic interpretations of Holy Scripture as Biblical truth.”

See “The Westboro Devil Cites Scripture,” http://bit.ly/bCiwP5, which pulls no punches with respect to homosexuality but which, I believe, is far more tempered than Westboro’s extremes.

I retract none of that, although some should be modified.

The WBC is still outlandish, hateful, vicious, and vile. However, even in its most recent outlandish, hateful, vicious, and vile theatened demonstrations against the memory of Mary Elizabeth Anania Edwards, protests that fortunately were never allowed to happen, reasonable people must grant that Westboro has some valid points.

Some additional points, negative points, are that AOL.com, Google.com, and Bing.com have made access to the Westboro Baptist Church home page virtually inaccessible. That concerted effort at internet censorship, assuming my browser isn’t the culprit, stinks almost as much as Westboro’s tactics.

Therefore, in the absence of any other active defense of the WBC and in view of the active suppression of the First Amendment rights of the WBC, I, grudgingly, offer my meager services.

To be blunt, Pastor Fred Phelps and Westboro’s alleged 40,000 adherents may best be described as imbecilic in many of their activities, though not in their beliefs. However, in view of the fact that America regularly elects imbeciles to govern them and millions of Americans worship at the feet of imbecilic celebrities, how can America–and AOL and Google and Bing– presume to selectively censor the WBC? . . .

John Edwards, Modern Icarus

A Modern Icarus Burning and Crashing
Icarus: Mythical Greek who disregarded common sense, flew too far and too high, melted his waxen wings in the heat of the sun, lost altitude rapidly, and plunged into the Icarian Sea.

Icarus, despite his great promise and future, was a dumbass or, as Obama might call him, a jackass. Those terms fit the former Democratic Senator John Edwards as well, maybe moreso. Narcissus might be another apt comparison.

The latest news on one of the country’s foremost fungi, reveals that he is not only a committed liar but an egomaniacal cad as well.

You may remember Johnny, the erstwhile politician, the po’ boy from North Carolina who rose to fame and riches thanks to his rhetorical skills in beating on various corporations on behalf of his law clients, from whom he milked a third of their legal settlements.

Johnny went on to use his wealth to buy a U.S. senate seat in 2000 then, seeing all that negative Edwards graffiti on N.C. walls, sucked up to John Kerry in 2004 and became the beauty element of the Kerry-Edwards beauty and the beast ticket.

They lost, thanks in small part to Johnny being caught so narcissistically infatuated with his coiffure that he made a future Republican VP candidate’s infatuation with shooting wolves from helicopters seem macho in comparison.

So, Johnny withdrew, not into obscurity but into his Two Americas which he hoped would serve as a springboard into the presidency in 2008.

Talk about presumption! That bid was almost as presumptive as some guy thinking he was qualified and should be president after all of 4 years as a senator!

Well, Johnny avoided any barber travesties during that failed campaign. He may not have withdrawn into obscurity but may wish he had withdrawn in other ways.

However, he was caught almost literally with his pants down in the Beverly Hilton in August, 2008 by the Enquirer.

Even hiding in a basement men’s room was of no avail and he eventually fessed up then compounded the mess he was in with yet another lie: He admitted to having an affair with a campaign aide but denied he had fathered her baby, thereby rendering his mistress not just an adulteress but a slut.

For more detail on Johnny’s Great Adventures, see http://www.genelalor.com/blog1/?p=336 and http://bit.ly/CPvpQ.

His dalliance with Rielle Hunter resulted in a failed effort for the presidency, as if he ever had a chance aside from his ego-promptings, but it did produce a love child.

Now it’s been revealed, if we can believe the printed words of a close aide who says he was importuned by Edwards to take responsibility and admit paternity, that it was all a carefully-plotted charade by the Carolina wonder boy to save his sorry arse.

It wouldn’t go over well for the political career of a good Carolina Christian to fess up that he had dallied in Rielle’s valley, a campaign staff videographer, as his wife lay dying back home, so close aide Andrew Young agreed to take the paternity bullet.

Young’s charges for said fib has now come due in the form of his yet to be released, untitled book.

Ms. Hunter is not yet on record identifying the true daddy. . . .
